Renewing unions - where do we start

By Becky Wright, Executive Director | 2 min

At Unions 21, we are working with lots of unions to try and help them develop their work.

One thing we have noticed, is that lots of unions want to try new things or look at how they can be doing things differently but they’re not always sure what to start on.

With that in mind, we are getting ready to launch our union maturity model at our Trade Union Renewal 2024 event

What will our model look at?

Our model will look at five key areas of union work and evaluate the level of maturity against key indicators. These areas are:

  • Emerging sectors and adaptation

  • Digitalisation and AI

  • Strengthening collective voice

  • Internal democracy

  • Building capacity

Ideas behind it

How mature your union is, will play a key role in how it develops and grows.

Unions will start projects or ideas or even continue with projects that aren’t gaining outcomes for members. When that happens, we don’t often reflect on why or attribute it to external events. However, if a union is ready or lacks the necessary maturity to handle the change, failures will continue.

When expanding the union, undertaking new projects, and establishing strategic collaborations, it is essential to simultaneously focus on enhancing organisational maturity. These entities, often referred to as learning organisations, are characterised by their ability to adapt and adjust to changes as they continue to evolve.

Levels of maturity

Our work will be useful for unions at any size and sector and will look at five key areas of maturity.

  • Informal

  • Defined

  • Integrated

  • Strategic

  • Fully Optimised

Any union that reaches fully optimised stands out as an organisation that constantly improves itself and is building for tomorrow.
