To be successful, a union needs to focus on four main pillars of work - membership (recruitment, retention, making sure unions reflect the industry and workforce), activism (supporting and developing activism), engagement (communications, dialogue and outreach) and lastly collective wins (campaigning, representation and negotiations).
This hybrid (entirely online but with sessions in person and self paced) training aims to give union staff, regardless of location and job, a solid and practical grounding in all of these topics to enable them to build their union for tomorrow.
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
Outline the key pillars which build a union’s capacity
Analyse the importance of union membership reflecting industries
Describe support work for effective volunteers
Demonstrate successful methods and tools to engage members
Differentiate and prioritise collective bargaining issues
