Renewing Unions - Strengthening Collective Voice

By Robert Murtagh, Director for Ireland | 2 min

Across the world, trade union membership and collective bargaining agreements range from high to barely existing.

But we know that when workers have access to engaged and representative unions, work is safer, pays better and is more equal.

In Europe, we’re working hard to transpose legislation to raise collective bargaining coverage and there has been some great explainers and thinking on this subject from across the union movement. UniEuropa has done some great work on this as evidenced by Stan De Spiegelaere’s blog for us here

In order for unions to strengthen collective voice, particularly in the private sector, we must be active in making the everyday case for it, helping members and the public see the value in it.

Trade unions and trade union centres are trying and must continue to make the case to governments to implement policies to support collective bargaining to create a modern, sustainable economy.  What is working and what are the activities that we need to pursue to ensure this is successful?

In our maturity model, we will be looking at how unions are able to adapt and push for the best collective bargaining models for the moment they find themselves in.
